Over the last decade, Weezer have become one of the most hit-or-miss outfits we have ever seen. After a fairly stable start at the beginning of their career, these last few releases have shown us some of the most inconsistent levels of quality from any outfit working today. Highlighted perfectly between their most recent 2019 collections, 'The Teal Album' and 'The Black Album', the latter of which was probably their worst full-length so far. But with two years to regroup, it feels like they are finally finding some form again as they return with their fourteenth LP 'OK Human', a record that is modest but not completely dreadful.
The problem Weezer have had in recent years is that they want to be the vibrant pop-rock outfit they once were, but seem to lack the sincerity in their writing, resulting in some hammed up collections that just don't gel together at all. But with 'OK Human', it feels as if they have found a direction that suits their more mature aesthetic. Adopting a far more string-based production, almost orchestral in places, this new release sees them deliver a batch of safe but still rather enjoyable cuts that don't make you want to turn off the stereo in a fit of rage. Which considering some of their albums is a strong win throughout.
It may not have the same flair that we are used to when we think back to their beginnings, but at least 'OK Human' has a confident and strong direction that fits into their current world. A nice and pleasant full-length that will please their loyal fanbase, and something the rest of us can dive into when the mood suits.
