White Denim - 'Side Effects'

7/10

It is sometimes hard to believe that White Denim have already released their ninth studio album. With their breathtaking debut 'Workout Holiday' only arriving eleven years ago, the Austin, Texas-based outfit have quickly proven themselves as one of the most prolific bands working today. And while their back catalogue to date has been a fuzzy blend of psych-rock, math-rock and disco-funk, 'Side Effects' looks to be the one that brings all those hallmarks together in a bold and bombastic release that rarely sees them slowing down.

Arriving roughly seven months after their previous LP 'Performance', this new collection somehow manages to keep the quick energy alive after such a short break away from the studio. Opening up with this wildly eccentric 'Small Talk (Feeling Control)', the band waste no time in slipping into their latest psychedelic rambling, and continue that high pace throughout the entire release. A frenzied mix of thunderous drums and filtered guitar hooks, the new record obviously works off the back of the intentions of their last release and aims to create an album that clings onto that motivation as far as it'll take them.

While not every track manages to keep its head above water, there is so much joy within their songwriting, it is hard not to find something to throughly enjoy on here. 'Side Effects' may not be their most proficient and exciting LP to date, but it does a fantastic job at continuing their iconic sound in a strong and confident way.
