Winona Oak - 'Void'

8/10

When Swedish artist Winona Oak released her stunning debut studio album 'Island Of The Sun' in 2022, it was the culmination of many years working the peripheries of the commercial scene. But since then, she has grown enormously in popularity, quickly establishing herself as one of the more progressive names in the alt-pop arena. And after a flurry of impactful offerings in the years since, she now looks to continue that effervescent direction on her new EP 'Void', a collection that hones more of that immersive songwriting she is known for.

While much of this new release was delivered as singles over recent months, hearing 'Void' all under one roof really captures the rich and alluring persona she has been developing since her initial full-length. Swapping between humbled acoustic-led serenades and more atmospheric tones throughout, this new six-track collection not only builds upon those illustrious foundations she has already created, but also unveils something more heartfelt and passionate as it plays, showing that she is still very much on top of her creative game here.

The sound of Winona Oak has certainly been a diverse one over the years, but 'Void' manages to rein in those sprawling ambitions to create an incredibly smooth and succinct listen. Oozing with these compelling textures that perfectly elevate her spellbinding vocals throughout, she returns to us with a brilliantly enjoyable new offering here.
