Wye Oak - 'No Horizon'

7/10

Since their earliest beginnings, US folk-pop duo Wye Oak have always been ones to push the boundaries of their sound. With an intention that looks to bring a diverse array of influences and directions to everything they do, it was clear after the release of their highly-praised 2018 studio album 'The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs' that they had their eyes set on a new challenge. Now after a brief two years away from the new music circuit, they return with a brand new EP 'No Horizon', which was recorded in collaboration with the Brooklyn Youth Chorus.

While Wye Oak have been no stranger to the idea of gospel and the levity it can add to a record, hearing this new collection all in one place certainly gives it a more lofty and airy feel than some of their more recent work. While they obviously aren't keen to let the choir become the focusing force of this new EP, they are used to great effect throughout, adding a true sense of wonder and captivation to the pair's more traditional style. With tracks like 'AEIOU' and 'No Place' providing much of the energy on here, 'No Horizon' sees the duo embrace more of the unknown and deliver a release that feels like the start of something new and exciting for the pair.

Although it may not be the most groundbreaking material in their impressive catalogue, 'No Horizons' has many glimmers of great inspiration and creativity that gives it an almost reborn feel in their cannon. Progressive and intriguing throughout, we are probably seeing the beginnings of the next evolutionary step in their career.
