Zola Blood - 'Meridian' EP

7/10

As one of the band's to watch over the last few months, London's Zola Blood have managed to capture the interest of critics and fans alike with their hybrid approach to electronically influenced indie rock. Coming across as a blend of The Temper Trap and Foals, their debut EP 'Meridian' has all the hallmarks of a group with a clear and determined focus that keeps their overall sound reigned in and on point.

Opening with their already well-recieved single 'Grace', with its irreverent electronics and overwhelming vocals, the EP moves in an ever-evolving direction, showing that while they like to maintain themselves to a particular formula, they do have the ability to grow their sound into whatever they feel is right. It morphs from one pace to the next to not only create a great variety amongst the four tracks, but also keeps the listener engaged throughout.

While its still very early days for this outfit, and a simple four-track EP may not be enough to really capture what they are all about, it is an impressive debut nonetheless. They are clearly in the right mindset to make it to the big leagues and with an introduction this good, they should have no problem in getting there.
