ARTIST OF THE WEEK: No.530 - The Thing

NYC rock torchbearers The Thing have dropped their latest double single 'Family Business / Can You Help Me?', ahead of their highly anticipated self-titled album 'The Thing', due this summer.

Blazing with raw energy and melodic garage-punk bite, these two new tracks showcase The Thing’s signature analog-first approach—recorded live to tape, self-produced, and without the use of computers. It’s a deliberate commitment to capturing the sweaty urgency and imperfect magic of their live shows.

'Can You Help Me?' has become a fan-favourite in their live sets, known for its rotating vocals—each verse sung by a different band member, who also switch stage positions in real time. It’s a stunt that never fails to mesmerize audiences. Frontman Zane Acord explains, “The inspiration behind ‘Can You Help Me?’ stems from the feeling of discontentment when you have other people do things for you. Whether it’s having other people ‘give you a song’ or control your thoughts and life.”

'Family Business', by contrast, dives headfirst into angular garage-rock with a cast of eccentric characters and a snappy rhythmic drive. Guitarist Michael Carter compares it to something from The Royal Tenenbaums, calling it “a little more angular and a little more dry” than anything the band has done before.
