Asylums - 'Signs Of Life'

7/10

Throughout their tenure so far, Asylums have always been ones to skirt around a specific genre in which to adopt. While many would peg them as an alt-rock act, much of their distinctive direction could also place them within the Britpop, post-punk, and indie-rock guises as well, giving them this brilliantly malleable sound that always hits with a surprise. And while their Steve Albini-produced LP 'Genetic Cabaret' earned them plenty of praise, they are now looking to build on that positive intention with their fourth studio album 'Signs Of Life', a record that sees them move toward a brighter aesthetic.

With the iconic Manic Street Preachers producer Dave Eringa behind the desk this time around, 'Signs Of Life' ventures more towards their British roots as they freshen up their sound for a richer and more euphoric angle. Cracking out a flurry of bold and explosive anthems, that can easily be traced back to numerous influences over the last few decades, their newest collection has this wonderfully retrospective feel to it. Wearing their inspirations very much on their sleeves, they unveil a warm and inviting array of gems that broadens and innovates their chosen field, making for a rousing listen throughout.

While it doesn't have the same instant punch as some of their older releases, 'Signs Of Life' is a brilliantly refined and developed step forward in their musical evolution. Shining with a confidence very few maintain at this point, they are continuing their rise as one of the country's most beloved outfits.
