Blossoms - 'Gary'

8/10

While their breakthrough self-titled debut album and its hit single 'Charlemagne' certainly put Blossoms on the map back in 2016, since then, the Stockport five-piece have spent much of their time exploring a more multifaceted approach to their sound. Originally building from that radio friendly indie-rock blueprint into one of the UK's more beloved outfits, their adventurous pursuit has seen them grow into a truly enigmatic presence of late. And with their 2022 effort 'Ribbon Around The Bomb' continuing that innovative approach, they are back once again with their fifth studio album 'Gary', a record that feels far more immersive than most.

Named after an eight-foot fibreglass gorilla was stolen from a Lanarkshire Garden Centre in early 2023, 'Gary' sees them develop a far more playful and woozy aesthetic for this new release. Inviting this heady mix of psychedelic and disco-inspired influences into their direction, their newest full-length feels like a fresh and rejuvenated addition to their ever-evolving catalogue. Brimming with rich and jovial grooves as often as possible, Blossoms have returned with a far more engaging outing this time around.

Very much a progression from some of their earlier material, 'Gary' almost feels like a new beginning for the band. Delivering some wonderfully enjoyable hooks as it plays, Blossoms are certainly looking to break the mould with this one.
