Chvrches - 'Every Open Eye'

7/10

After Scottish electro trio Chvrches released their debut album 'The Bones Of What You Believe' back in 2013, the pop landscape never quite looked the same again. The band's broody and dark approach to production gave us a whole new angle to look at contemporary music from and the band become one of the most lusted after acts of that year. But now returning for their second full-length, what have they managed to conjure up after an extensive amount of time on the road?

On the whole, 'Every Open Eye' is a very literal continuation of their debut. Not ones for expanding their sound just yet, this new work seems to focus more on the glossy electro-pop from the first album and concentrate on that. The moody backdrops do make the odd appearance here and there, but for most of this new release, the band seem to have taken what they know works and recreated for a full eleven track release.

It seems that the threesome have managed to narrow their sound down for this new record, which makes for a very cohesive sound but lacks that extra something that can keep you fully engaged from start to finish. A triumphant if not more limited return.
