David Brent - 'Life On The Road'

4/10

For those that are familiar with the Ricky Gervais character David Brent, and indeed Gervais' own history as a failed popstar, will be more than aware of what to expect on this album. The record itself serves as an extended soundtrack to the new film 'Life On The Road', in which Brent cashes in all his chips to live out his lifelong ambition to be a musician. But one who he thinks will change the world, giving in to his own delusions as someone with real talent and a voice that needs to be heard.

The mistake a lot of people will make when coming to this record is expecting a laugh-out-loud comedy album. This is not the case as these songs were written within the context given to them by the feature film, and while moments of the release are funny, it is through the deliberate intentions of making it a horrible listen. This makes it extremely difficult to critique as the music acts as a form of satire against artists who have gone solo, thinking that they themselves were the source of all the talent.

It is bland, contrived and at times extremely cringe-worthy in its lyrically content, but with that being the intention, I guess you could call it a triumph of sorts. I think we'll be glad if this remains the only musical release from Brent as I don't think the world could stomach any more.
