Deerhoof - 'The Magic'

7/10

You'd be hard pressed to come across a band as prolific as Deerhoof. Having already released five albums in the last five years, the band are now looking to make that six with their latest full-length 'The Magic'. The group's sixteenth studio album is said to be inspired by the artists that each member grew up listening to, but before you start thinking this is going to sound like a trip down memory lane, just remember the weirdness they are already known for.

The sound of Deerhoof is an acquired one. A mixture of ferocious punk rock and avant-garde experimentation continues to be the direction on this new release, and still makes for interesting listening. There is always something on these records that takes you by surprise and this release is no different. And while their influences for this record may be lost in the experimentation, it still retains that familiar sound that makes it such a wonderful listen.

Those who look to seek out strange and unusual music will certainly enjoy this release if they haven't already discovered Deerhoof. It is probably one of their more accessible albums to date, and will probably convince you to start looking back through their catalogue very quickly.
