Ezra Furman - 'All Of Us Flames'

7/10

Throughout her tenure, whether it be her solo ventures or as part of Ezra Furman And The Harpoons or Ezra Furman And The Visions, Ezra Furman has always been one searching for something new to explore. Regularly adopting broad and vivid textures into her work, there has always been this sense of yearning for something bigger throughout her work to date. But with Trump's departure, COVID, and coming out as transgender all transpiring since her last studio effort, she is ready to find a truer voice on her sixth solo album 'All Of Us Flames', a record that harks back to a simpler time.

While a forward-thinking nature has always been a part of her drive, 'All Of Us Flames' rests itself far more within a raw and nostalgic direction, not too dissimilar to where Jack White has been heading recently as well. Capturing the warm and sweeping textures most associated with 60s blues and soul music, Furman has looked to revive these retro ideals for a modern ear and deliver something more inventive from start to finish. Feeling freer and more confident than ever, there is a strong spiritual thread running throughout her newest material that creates a wonderfully adventurous listen as well.

Although she has been extremely careful not to alienate her devout following to date, 'All Of Us Flames' certainly maintains a solid bridge between her formative sound and where this new release looks to explore. Brimming with warmth and endearing tones, she is capturing a wonderfully refreshing guise that really shines through.
