Fabian Brusk-Jahn - 'In the Dungeons of Bäckabo'

7/10

Throughout these last few years, Swedish artist Fabian Brusk-Jahn has established himself as one of the more inventive names doing the rounds. Coupling this folk-inspired aesthetic with a more adventurous approach to both production and instrumentation has earned him a reputation for fresh and distinctive compositions, all of which look to add something new and interesting to his repertoire. And after a vibrant array of gems in recent times, he now returns with his latest EP 'In the Dungeons of Bäckabo', a collection that builds upon his dynamic direction to date.

While its cover art depicts a more haunted aesthetic with an image reminiscent of Cormac McCarthy's 'The Road', this new EP is describes itself as "painted against a background of dreams and fairy tales", something that feels more apt as it moves along. Adopting this beautifully warm and emotive aesthetic from start to finish, 'In the Dungeons of Bäckabo' has this beautiful ebb and flow to it, something that perfect suits Brusk-Jahn's own sombre vocals throughout. Whether it's a bold and uplifting atmosphere or something more pensive, the frontman looks to make his own mark on it, weaving through the mist and delivering some of his more compelling material yet.

While his tenure has been quieter these last few years, 'In the Dungeons of Bäckabo' shows there is still plenty of innovative spirit coursing through him right now. Brimming with this warmth and vigour throughout all five tracks, he certainly looks to leave a lasting impression with this mystifying new delight.

Fabian Brusk-Jahn's new EP 'In the Dungeons of Bäckabo' will be available to stream from the 6th December via Suicide Records.
