Feature Films - 'Feature Films'

6/10

Hailing from the scenic US state of Ohio, psychedelic quintet Feature Films deliver their self-titled debut album, a record that has managed to capture the forward-thinking yet solemn attitude in modern music. With influences stretching as far as the surf rock sound of California to southern-inspired blues, 'Feature Films' is an album that is determined to open up your mind and preconceptions of what this band stand for and creates a diverse and enigmatic sound in the process.

While much of the record seems to stick to a wistful and calming approach (note the sound of crickets in background to 'Crickets'), 'Feature Films' has this uncanny ability to shift its sound from ebb to flow without a moment hesitation, making for a very fluid sound throughout the record. Its quieter than quiet demeanour gives it that Springsteen-esque appeal, with just a hint of rock n roll subtlety working its way through each song and keeping the pace of the album always on the up.

It may not be the most interesting of albums to adopt this sound but it is certainly a pleasant listen from a band still looking for their place in the scene. A positive introduction from five guys who just need a little more attention heading their way.
