Filthy Friends - 'Invitation'

6/10

After making a name for themselves covering David Bowie songs and releasing one of the many anti-Trump singles so far this year, US supergroup Filthy Friends have now unveiled their debut album 'Invitation'. Made up of members of R.E.M., Sleater-Kinney, The Minus 5 and King Crimson, the band's overall flair for high-energy comes from their respective experiences, and this new full-length aims to combine their collective years on the scene into one ball-busting release.

While the record starts slow with the single 'Despierta', it quickly picks up its pace and becomes quite comfortable sending itself on a journey of engaging guitar licks and some relatable lyrics coming from the band's frontwoman Corin Tucker. Yet despite all its promise, it doesn't really have much of an identity about it. Much of the material sounds too similar to make out any difference between them, and also feels a lot like a collection of R.E.M. b-sides.

Still, it makes for an enjoyable release and given the level of quality in the line-up, that is the least you would have expected. But while much the record moves along without any trouble, it is hardly anything to get massively excited about.
