The Flaming Lips - ‘Oczy Mlody’

6/10

While The Flaming Lips may have been in the news more for their bizarre collaborations with popstar Miley Cyrus over the last few years, it seems that the band's intentions to bemuse and intrigue listeners is far from fading as they return with their fourteenth mind-bending full-length 'Oczy Mlody'. A record that sees the band return to their experimental roots more than ever.

Ever since The Flaming Lips realised their undoubted masterpiece 'Yoshimi Battles The Pink Robots' back in 2002, much of their subsequent material seems to have looked back to that record in an attempt to improve. But for the first time in a long time, we are seeing the team bring us back to their dark and non-linear roots with a series of unusual and diverse productions that show us exactly what made them such an interesting group to begin with.

While it doesn't really have the same feel to many of their other releases, 'Oczy Mlody' is still, for the most part, an exciting listen. Taking a far darker and more brooding direction, this new record is a psychedelic treat for those with an alternative disposition, even if it does fall short of the mark from time to time.
