FLORIDA - 'Metal Detector'

7/10

While many bands look to the future for their latest inspiration, others have sought solace in reinventing the sounds of yesteryear, and this is exactly the mentality of US newcomers FLORIDA. Inspired by the life lessons they received growing up in their home state, the band have rekindled that forgotten magic of alt-rock acts in the 70s and 80s, rebranding them for a modern ear. And with no time left to lose, they are breaking through onto the scene with their hotly-tipped debut album 'Metal Detector', a record that cements them as true innovators on the rise right now.

While they certainly wear their influences firmly on their sleeve, 'Metal Detector' still manages to cultivate a distinctive direction in which to call its own. Creating these brilliantly rich and alluring aesthetics that ebb and flow as often as possible, this new nine-track offering makes for a dazzling introduction to their sound so far. Blending a heady mix of rip-roaring guitar hooks with a more heartfelt approach to songwriting, FLORIDA are bursting out of the gates with gusto and tenacity from start to finish.

It may still be very early days for them right now, but 'Metal Detector' is certainly a record worth listening to more than once. FLORIDA have crafted a fresh and enjoyable sound for themselves, one that will no doubt serve them very well in the years ahead as well.
