Flume - 'Skin'

7/10

Depending on where you are in the world massively affects your exposure to Flume. In the UK, the Aussie producer is seen as more of a cult name, whereas in his home nation, you'll regularly see him headlining festivals across the continent. Which basically comes to how you like his take on down-tempo EDM, something that continues in fine form on his second studio release 'Skin'.

While the direction may not have changed too much on this record, you clearly see that the ante has been upped this time around. Bringing in a number of high-profile collaborators such as Beck, AlunaGeorge, Little Dragon, Raekwon and many more, Flume is certainly hoping that this album appeals more to the European and US audiences he is yet to completely win over. Its crossover blend of harsh electronics and ambient soundscapes can jar on occasion but that seems to be part of the whole Flume package.

Certainly an interesting record if not a little dated in places. Some of the electronic breakdowns seem too close to the EDM/dubstep-esque basslines that the UK has fallen out of favour with of late, but in all, it is something different from the norm and can definitely received praise for that.
