Gengahr - 'Red Sun Titans'

8/10

Ever since they first emerged with their breakthrough debut LP 'A Dream Outside' in 2015, Gengahr have always been one of those bands sitting on the peripheries of the commercial scene, despite a string of highly-praised and critically-acclaimed releases under their belt. Always ones looking to innovative and explore new concepts with each effort, they have cemented themselves as one of the more exciting and unpredictable names doing the rounds today. And now look to continue more of that inventive direction on their fourth full-length 'Red Sun Titans', a record brimming with fun and adventurous ideas.

While their earlier work has this wonderfully fresh and alluring appeal to it, 'Red Sun Titans' sees a more assured and confident Gengahr at the helm. Rather than having to worry about which tracks will be the radio-friendly singles or live crowd favourites, their latest collection is this brilliantly dreamy offering that sees them pursue almost anything they fancy. With its warm and calming nature layered throughout, it feels like the band have finally reached their stride as they run through this new outing with a swagger unlike anything we have heard from them before.

As Gengahr quickly approach their decade milestone in a few years, 'Red Sun Titans' feels like the beginning of the next phase within their musical evolution to date. Branching away from some of the simpler and traditional indie-rock aesthetics of their infancy, they are breaking new ground throughout this new album, giving it a beautifully fresh and distinctive direction from start to finish.
