Getting To Know... Astles

Having already established himself with a dynamic array of delights these last few months, Liverpool-based artist Astles is back on the grind once again to deliver his breezy new single 'Remember Us?'

Lifted from his forthcoming debut album 'Soundtrack For The 21 Bus Home', which is set to land on the 30th May, 'Remember Us?' continues that smooth and immersive indie-rock aesthetic he has been carving out for himself. With his rich and enchanting vocals layered across a bouncing, piano-led production throughout, he continues to shine as one of the more captivating names on the rise right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to discover more about his background and what has inspired his sound the most.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

It was guitar, probably just a rubbish nylon string that you get when you’re in primary school. But it helped me learn my first chords, then there was no stopping me.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

When I was really little, just the stuff my mum and dad loved, like The Waterboys, The Beatles and Billy Joel, that sort of thing. Then when I was a bit older, I started to love more of the indie of the time, like Bombay Bicycle Club. But the Beatles, were and always will be my favourite.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Darkside Of The Moon. I bought it from the local record shop before I even had a record player because I thought it looked really cool. I still have it now.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

God Only Knows by The Beach Boys.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Sit and the piano and throw away the phone. Try and enjoy it and chase the feeling, that's about it.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Andy Shauf is my favourite of modern times. I also love my friends' music, Ellis Murphy, Mickey Callisto and Louie Miles. They are amazing.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Sir Paul McCartney.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Writing songs that help you learn a bit more about yourself every time. Connecting to your true self. Writing is like a lifeboat in the choppy seas of life.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Social Media stuff.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Celebrate every win. Given to me by my wonderful friend and mentor Austin W Wilde.
