What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Like most kids getting into music it was acoustic guitar for me. My dad played a little so there was always a guitar around the house. I wasn’t really inspired to play though until I was six years old and watched the movie ‘Drake And Josh Go Hollywood’ which ends with Drake playing a song for a radio show. I thought it was the coolest thing ever and begged my mum to get me guitar lessons!
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
In my younger teens I was into a lot of emo, pop punk and heavier stuff. I found that listening to it made me feel bigger and stronger. Headphones in, My Chemical Romance playing, lovely times.
What was the first album you remember owning?
I didn’t own or even really know about albums until I got my first IPod when I was about 12 years old. I bought ‘Motion In The Ocean’ by Mcfly and I can pinpoint that being one of the moments where my life changed forever hehe. Massive Mcfly fan here!
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
The Night We Met by Lord Huron. I love singing that song so much and the music makes me feel so vulnerable but joyous at the same time.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I keep a note on my phone of little ideas that’ll fall into mind when I’m just out and about. Also endless voice notes too. When I get into writing it’s just about going back through those ideas and seeing which ones still resonate with me.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
I’m currently obsessed with Half Alive, Rhys Lewis, Julia Jacklin and Leith Ross. I’m going to see Leith Ross live next month and I’m honestly so excited I may cry (will definitely cry).
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Can I have three please?? My dream supports are Lewis Capaldi, Dodie and Lizzie McAlpine. All of them are massive inspirations to me as artists and live performers!!
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
The connection I get to have with other people, especially when I play live. I did a lot of shows as the support act last year and so I mostly played to strangers who had never heard of me. But I shared my story through my songs and found that it led to such beautiful moments with people who related to my music. The best feeling ever though is hearing people sing my lyrics back to me, it’s all I’ve ever wanted and I’ve been so lucky to experience that.
And what is the most frustrating part?
I’ve been so privileged in the last year that writing songs and playing live across the UK and Europe has gotten to be my job. I get anxious sometimes that there’s a ticking timer on that and so sometimes I feel like I’m waiting on something to happen that’ll help make this my permanent life. But then I get frustrated at myself for that because really I should just love every second of this because I’m so lucky to even have had the time that I’ve had.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
That being your most vulnerable and honest self is a superpower not a weakness. That advice changed my life as a songwriter, performer and as a person.
