What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The piano is the first instrument I fell in love with. As a kid, I saw my mother and her father playing it, and I always wanted to learn to do the same. I started learning on my own at 7 years old, after my parents bought me a small electric keyboard for my birthday. To this day, it is still my main instrument and many of the songs I write start at the piano.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

As a kid my mother made me listen to a lot of jazz and soul music, as well as Motown records, while my dad was more listening to pop music. I became a huge Michael Jackson fan as a little girl, and I was also very much into Disney Channel and movies like “High School Musical”. It was in my teenage years that I really started exploring different genres and falling in love with artists like Prince, Beyoncé, Mariah Carey, or Frank Ocean.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I owned was probably in my pre-teen or early teenage years… I’m not sure but I think it was “Take Me Home” by One Direction. I was a big One Direction fan around that age. I still am actually!

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

“Purple Rain” by Prince.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I like to set an intention before writing a song, especially if I’m just letting things flow. But even if I come in with a specific idea, I believe setting an intention is important. You might not know how the song will turn out but at least you know what you want to convey, and what the song’s purpose is.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

At the moment, I’m listening to a lot of Charli XCX, Tyla, Rosalía… I tend to gravitate towards music that makes me want to dance.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

I would love to open for The Weeknd, his shows are such huge productions, being on a stage that big would probably feel surreal. And I also know his crowds are incredible!

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The most wonderful part is when you hear that someone has connected to your music in some way. That it made them feel understood, or less lonely. Just knowing that someone’s had a better 3 minutes because of your song is the coolest thing in the world.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Not everybody will understand how important music is to you. I come from a small town, and many people just see music as a hobby. They don’t necessarily take you seriously and have a very surface-level perspective on something that, from your perspective, is everything.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Always believe in you. It’s cliché but if you don’t nobody else will. Once you’ve gained that confidence and belief in yourself, you start enjoying what you create, perform and share with the world. It makes everything easier.
