Getting To Know... DZE Like RZA

Having already made a serious mark with a string of impactful outings these last few years, Phoenix-based rapper DZE Like RZA has now returned to share his latest jam 'First Time'.

Bringing back more of that bold and driven aesthetic he is known for, 'First Time' makes for a stellar return to form for the artist at the helm. With his fresh and passionate flow riding across a compelling production throughout, he continues to shine as one of the more impactful names on the rise right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

The drum set. Growing up I used to always want to play the drums at our family church but I never actually learned how.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I mainly listened to music from TV shows and what my family played around me. My pops only listened to Jazz with no lyrics and my mom mainly played gospel during that time so I liked Kirk Franklin too. Then my big sister would play hip hop: Ja Rule, Busta, Nelly so I listened to a mix of everything they played.

What was the first album you remember owning?

It was a burned CD from my older sister with a mix of hip-hop song I remember it had tracks like “My Name Is” by Eminem & “I love My Chick” by Busta Rhymes I had the clean versions lol.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

All Falls Down by Kanye West

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I have to listen to the beat a few times and usually try to come up with a topic or hook before I start the verses.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Mick Jenkins, BigX, Babyfxce E

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

J. Cole, Ab-Soul

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I just like the process of creating and seeing the idea come to life and trying make it sound how it sounds in my head.

And what is the most frustrating part?

The most frustrating part for me the business side of making music.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Write what comes to you and try to finish your ideas before you decide it's not a good one.
