Getting To Know... The Entitled Sons

Having already established themselves with a wave of impressive outings these last few years, East Somerset family band The Entitled Sons continue to shine on their anthhemic new single 'Jocelyn'.

Lifted from their forthcoming debut EP 'Still Too Young', which is set to arrive in the coming months, 'Jocelyn' makes for a brilliantly bold and driven return for them. With its swaggering hooks, soaring atmosphere, and stellar vocals layered throughout, they are returning with one of their most impactful releases to date here.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with them to find out more about their origins and what has been inspiring them most recently.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

We all played the piano when we were younger, I think only me (Charlie) and Billy still feel the love. Dad bought raff a guitar the day after our piano teacher refused to teach him and to be fair he just seemed to click with it from the start. Laurie still plays a bit when you can get him off the drums.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I know it might be a vague word to use but honestly, we had a very eclectic upbringing! All kind of music like all genres of music, but to name a few, Classics like Oscar Peterson, The Beatles, ABBA, Zeppelin, Kasabian, Maroon 5, Muse, Kid Laroi and Kendrick Lamar.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Billy – ‘An Awesome Wave’ by Alt J
Charlie – Paolo Nutini - Caustic Love
Graham – Led Zepp 2 - still the best album ever made by anyone IMHO.
Raffey – Bob Marley - Legend
Laurie – Nirvana – Nevermind – is the first album I can admit to!

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

It would have to be a classic that people will listen to in 100 years, something like Hotel California.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Does fighting count? Being four Brothers and a Dad our habits are well rooted in our upbringing and family habits so we do tend to argue a little during the creative process but nothing like a healthy disagreement before we knuckle down and get stuff done! Our music writing process is varied, from one of us just playing a cool riff and it building to a song or Charlie singing a melody or someone writing out some words. We tend to have an inconsistent habit of approaching a song from every angle.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Kid Kapechi are great live and don’t shy away from political comments, other stuff we like at the moment is Wes Ghost the Deftones, Palaye Royal, Queens of the Stone Age Muse, and there’s a great local band called The Family Rain, who people should definitely listen to more.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Surely we’d all go for Taylor Swift for the exposure?? But who would we love to open for, 1975 because I reckon they would be a great laugh, so if you are reading this 1975…

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Playing live, and hearing people sing your songs back to you is amazing. Also, the stories we hear from people after about how a certain song may have helped them in a particularly challenging time, or to enhance a good time, is what it is all about.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Thinking you’ve just written the next hit, finally found that amazing tune and the best one yet… then waking up the next day to realise it was actually rubbish when you listen back.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

A great songwriter once told us, when you write a chorus – “Just make it dumb!”. And also, just have fun!
