What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
Connor- Piano, I was classically trained as a kid which developed my music brain early on!
Jake- Piano, I started teaching myself using the internet as soon as I could climb up in the bench.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
Connor- Pop punk and 2000s hip hop lol, still the greatest era to have been a kid (RIP). The Beatles inspired me a lot though to approach music creatively & write when I was a young teenager.
Jake- Nora Jones, JackJohnson, Earth wind and fire, jimmy buffett- really anything feel-good that was played by my mom.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Connor- Usher’s Confessions album haha
Jake- High school Musical 2 Soundtrack, for real.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Connor- The Way I feel Inside by The Zombies
Jake- Sleep by Eric Whitacre
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Connor- Isolation, I need to escape into my own little world to focus creatively and be inspired. Uninterrupted isolation allows my brain to slip into a focused state of productive experimentation I cannot achieve with others around.
Jake- I always get the best results when I have some old wrestling playing on mute on a second screen.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Connor- Turnover, Chon, BETWEEN FRIENDS, Darius, Hundredth, TPain, KIRINJI, Don Toliver, A-Wall. I’m all over the place.
Jake- Tyler the Creator, Idles, The 1975.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Connor- Turnover
Jake- Jimmy Buffett
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Connor- The connection you make with others as well as your own subconscious. Writing and expressing what you feel & think through this medium helps me learn a lot about myself and others through the process.
Jake- Sharing with others & the progression of an idea through everyone’s individual filters.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Connor- Being discouraged when the ideas don’t flow freely and easily. Sometimes I must remind myself there is no rush and that if I take a step back and give it time, the right ideas will come. Don’t force it.
Jake- Being objective about what fits and what doesn’t.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Connor- Allow your sound to be true to how you are feeling, don’t modify your sound to appease what you think others might want to hear. There is a balance in there.
Jake- Don’t overthink shit- Kenny Beats
