What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Great question, the first instrument I fell in love with was no question the drums. I still remember trying to identify the sound of a hi-hat on a drum set while listening to TLC waterfalls as a little kid. Yup way back in the 90s.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I was exposed to a lot of Soul music like Marvin Gaye, and disco music like KC and Sunshine Band when I was very young. I gravitated toward those records and remember learning to put on vinyl records at a super young age. As a teen I flirted with punk and then landed on hip hop for quite a while. And then somehow began to gravitate back to pop songwriting.

What was the first album you remember owning?

This is a great one. ACE OF BASS baby! The Sign was my first real game changing favourite song. I was obsessed with it. Loved the mix of sounds there. Just blew my mind as a 9 year old first starting to dissect music.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Hmmm that's a tough one. I think ‘Two Princes’ by Spin Doctors. That's another childhood favourite that kind of entered my DNA.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Oh yes, I love to start with a melody. Humming random nonsense over chords and then letting some words come through naturally. That's how I usually start out songs. I also use the notes app on my iPhone religiously.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Great question. Right now I have Spin Doctors and Ace of Bass playing because I just was reminded of them lol. But some other favs that are in my current listing circulation are a pretty random mix. SIA, Rachael Platton, Method Man and Redman’s Black Out record, and a spattering of underground hip hop from Rawkus Records compilations.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

I would love to open up for 311 because it seems they have an extremely dedicated fan base and are rad!

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Being able to express yourself without fear of judgement, or in the face of judgment and overcoming that. Really powerful stuff to do in a society that has so many boundaries and rules.

And what is the most frustrating part?

The lack of stability and income are absolutely the rough parts.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Don't compromise what you feel is good for someone else’s opinion. All you have is your intuition, and it is there for good reason.
