What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

When I was younger, I was one of those typical kids whose parents encouraged them to take up classical piano. The instrument will always be my first love even if currently I’m working with the guitar as well.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I grew up with my mom’s love of country music, and enjoyed listening to Dolly Parton and the Dixie Chicks during car rides. I also have and always listened to Joni Mitchell and Lady Gaga.

What was the first album you remember owning?

The first album I ever downloaded was “Confident” by Demi Lovato.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

“You Say” by Lauren Daigle is an incredible track, especially the lyrics of the chorus. By never revealing the identity of the subject, Lauren allows a wide range of listeners to relate to the song. They can each find comfort in their personal interpretation of the meaning.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I typically start by creating a melody, and write lyrics afterwards. Sometimes, when overwhelmed with emotion I know exactly what the main idea of the song will be and other times inspiration is spontaneous. I don’t typically have a routine when writing music, I am constantly finding new ways to create.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I listen to a variety of artists, but some of my current favorites are Conan Grey, The Smiths, and Sara Bareilles.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Conan Grey is an incredible musician with a huge range of music in his discography. Particularly, I have enjoyed listening to his album Superache. I have also watched his interviews and find him relatable. He is funny and down to earth, yet he has a flair for the dramatic. I think I could connect with other fans of his music and be a good opening act.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

When going through hardship, there is always a bright side: I am able to take my emotions and find solace in transforming them into music. Writing is a way for me to simplify a vast world while simultaneously creating art.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Writer’s block without a doubt. I have definitely gone through times where I find it hard to express myself. These periods are very difficult especially as someone so passionate about and typically very connected to music.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

It sounds cheesy but to write for yourself. Focus on your writing, rather than everyone’s reaction to it. Releasing music is revealing your personal journey to others, and not everyone will relate. Those that do will be your audience. Every musician should seek listeners who they can form authentic connections with, rather than feeling the need to fit into a mould.
