Getting To Know... Jayd Ink

After spending the last few years captivating us with a rich and sweeping array of R&B delights, Toronto-based artist Jayd Ink is back once again to unveil her compelling new EP 'Catching Red Lights'.

Featuring the previously shared wonder 'Queen St', the new three-track collection aims to cement her proficient direction these last few months. Filled with a raw and heartfelt approach to both songwriting and production throughout, 'Catching Red Lights' makes for wondrous and alluring listen from start to finish.

So with her new collection available to stream now, we sat down with her to find out more about her origins and what has inspired her most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

I love vocal melodies. That’s my first love.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

The same music I love now - Reggae, R&B & Soul, Hip Hop, Jazz.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Kanye West - College Dropout.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?


Frank Ocean - Thinkin Bout You.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Sometimes I keep crystals on my desk while I’m writing / recording.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’m listening to Beyonce’s album at the moment. Loveee it.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Kendrick Lamar.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The most rewarding part for me is being in a groove when I’m inspired. You never know how a song is going to turn out but when you're in the zone that feeling is unmatched. I also love when fans reach out and express how a song made them feel or when they encourage me to keep going.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Feeling like you constantly need to create content to have your music heard.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Always educate yourself on the business of music.
