What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Voice was the first thing for me, I was singing all day long. Solo, groups, choirs. I loved all of it. Eventually, I decided to teach myself guitar, so I could write more songs, more often. I quickly threw myself into learning and practising, spending hours every week trying to improve. Guitar’s still my favourite instrument to write on now.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

In my early years, it was chart pop mainly. As I got into my teens, that switched to rock, alternative, and pop-punk. It means that I love loud guitars with super-catchy pop melodies now!

What was the first album you remember owning?

Madonna’s ‘Like a Prayer’. I probably know all the lyrics off by heart still! It’s a great pop album, but there’s hints of several other genres in there too, including rock. It was the melodies that drew me to it at first, but over time, I started to appreciate the confessional style of the lyrics too. That’s definitely something I’ve carried into my own music.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

This is such a tough question! Okay… I’m going to go with ‘All I Wanted’ by Paramore. It starts off quiet and just builds into an absolute monster of a song. The chorus is so emotive, you can’t help but stop what you’re doing and listen to it. I’m not surprised it’s become a fan favourite.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

I note down little scraps of ideas during my day - random phrases, song titles etc. It might be something someone said, or an idea that pops up while I’m listening to a podcast. Then when I sit down to write, I’ll go through my collection of ideas for inspiration. It usually gives me a few different threads I can follow to write a song.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I’ve been listening a lot to The Home Team, who recently toured the UK with Honey Revenge and The Used. Their songs are so catchy. I’m also really loving Meet Me @ The Altar and Taylor Acorn lately too. I always listen to them when I need an energy boost!
