What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
I first fell in love with the guitar. Me and my friend Mikey taught ourselves how to play when we were 7!
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
I was into Britpop and also into bands like Depeche mode - dark pop. I grew up in a Christian commune which meant commercial music was banned so we had to go get our musical fix on the sly. I went to my friends houses and burned CDs etc there.
What was the first album you remember owning?
Definitely maybe oasis!
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Coldplay - Yellow - what a beautifully uplifting tune and so simple!
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
Ideas come to me at the strangest times so I have loads of voice note ideas on my phone. I like to have my guitar around as often as I can. I think it’s just about getting on with it sometimes, it’s like fishing - you ain’t gonna catch anything if you don’t cast the net.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
Teddy Swims, Lottery Winners and Cian Ducrot.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Coldplay!!!!
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
Connecting with people. When someone messages me saying that a song of mine has really resonated with them, that means the most.
And what is the most frustrating part?
Just trying to reach your audience can be very hard work, but the hard work does pay off eventually. It can be easy to get discouraged along the way but I’ve just kept going and good things are happening!
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
You can only do this job if you truly love it and if you are truly expressing yourself and not trying to be anyone else. Be authentic and practise every f*#king day.
