Getting To Know... NEWĀRK

Following on from his highly-praised studio album 'Flowers That Don't Exist' in 2021, Rotterdam-based artist NEWĀRK is back on the grind once again to deliver his woozy new single 'Without A You'.

Bringing back more of that rich and shimmering indie-pop aesthetic he has earned a reputation for over the years, 'Without A You' sees him returning to the fold in fine form throughout. With its broad and emotive textures, sweeping atmosphere, and his own stellar vocals at the helm, he continues his ascent as one of the more exciting names on the rise with this one.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most over the years.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

My dad is a pianist, he used to play our piano all the time. I loved listening to it and started my lessons when I was 6. I love the sound of the hammers landing on the strings.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I used to listen to hip hop/trap a lot. It helped me through puberty. But I listened to a lot of stuff. Depends on the mood I was in. I have always been a bit of a cinematic listener. I use the music to make the mood stronger.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Thriller by Micheal Jackson was the first CD I got from my dad. I remember that I thought it was a bit weird to give it to me because I never really listened to Micheal Jackson before but by this album I started to appreciate his music more.

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Here Comes The Sun by The Beatles. This song is amazing. The beauty this song got with simple melodies is incredible and super pure.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

It goes like 24/7, sometimes a melody or lyric beeps up in my head then I write or make a memo out of it. When I’m in the studio I open it again and make a song out of it. I start with piano most of the time because it’s my most comfortable instrument. Then I rebuilt or edited it with other instruments and made it a great song.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

Bill Evans and Thundercat. I am really into jazz lately, I mean I always was but nowadays it’s more and more. Probably a period but I love to listen to it. It calms me down and hypes me up when I need it.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

If I could open a show for Thundercat I would be down immediately.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

The most rewarding part is when you feel that you help people, make them feel better. When your song is the one where they make memories with and keep reminding them about it. Spreading love is the best thing ever.

And what is the most frustrating part?

The business side for an artist. I believe there are a lot more amazing talents in the world but many of them don’t have the opportunity to stand out. It’s all about networking or having money if it doesn’t come to music. This is sad but the hard truth…

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Keep making the art. What you make is fire. Keep doing what you do, no matter what happens. Try more and step out of your comfort zone when you are ready for that. It will open new doors.
