What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
The piano! My mom would have to wake me up early and keep me up late to make sure I practised each day. Eventually I realised that I could play songs I liked on it, and it’s been my favourite since.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
2010’s Indie Rock man. Phoenix, Foster the People, Passion Pit - the sound was just so exciting, and I still love that feeling today. Whenever my dad would play Outkast was also a delight.
What was the first album you remember owning?
I remember vividly going with my mom to Target to pick up Day & Age by The Killers. I think I broke my CD player. I was playing it so much. Great album, cool artwork, all around classic in my eyes.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
Midnight City by M83. It’s a perfect song really. When I heard the sax solo for the first time, I think that's when I decided the rest of my life would be filled with music.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
My latest thing is trying to wear shoes. I still work in my living room so I gotta remind myself to take it seriously, and for whatever reason, the shoes are helping.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
If you haven't been put onto Mont Duamel, he is someone that I can’t get enough of. Besides that, It's all love to the Utah Homies - Future Ex.Boyfriend, Heather Grey, Micah Dean, Bad Heather. All stellar.
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
Daft Punk, just to see them perform.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
I can’t really do maths, but sometimes it feels like a portal opens up and new ideas come out of nowhere. The ability to catch those from time to time, that’s where the magic is.
And what is the most frustrating part?
You have to sell it.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
That Ira Glass video from ages ago. The Gap he called it, between your taste and your work. I don’t know if I’ll ever find myself at the top of that mountain, but maybe that's the whole point!
