What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

My mom’s 1972 Martin acoustic guitar.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I loved the music my mom loved and passed down to me—Blue by Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and Dolly Parton. I also had a love for Michael Jackson and then later Janet Jackson, and would try to recreate her music videos with my sister. In my twenties I got more into weirder cooler stuff like Radiohead, Stereolab, Kate Bush…

What was the first album you remember owning?

I think it was a cassette tape of Heart in Motion by Amy Grant (so very 90s and obscure!)

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

I don’t really wish that…I think everyone is supposed to write the song they’re supposed to write.

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

For my last few albums, I pray that God works through me.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

I love the album Subtle Movements by Surya Botasfina and Four Tet’s latest.

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

One of my friends’ bands.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

Sharing a deep exchange that I have had with my spirit and with God and hoping it brings the listener closer to their own soul.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Mixing.

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Make the album you want to make and fuck ‘em. (Neil Young told me that!)
