What was the first instrument you fell in love with?
I started playing piano at a very young age but the first instrument I fell in love with was the electric guitar. Growing up in a classical music household it was a revelation when I finally got my own and was finally able to play the music I was into.
What kind of music did you love when you were younger?
I was into Prince, Michael Jackson, Phil Collins & Genesis, The Beatles, classic stuff.
What was the first album you remember owning?
The first album I remember purchasing with my own money was Genesis “We Can’t Dance”. I was obsessed with Phil Collins and Genesis at a very young age.
What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?
I would say either Prince “The Beautiful Ones” or Gap Band “Early in the Morning”. That’s the bar I’m trying to reach with my own music.
Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?
I have an inspirational playlist that I usually go through to get into the zone, it also involves botanicals.
Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?
She’s having quite a moment right now but Charli XCX has been a huge inspiration since I started my project in 2016. I really love what Anderson Park is doing as well. Or guys like Dabeul & Diamond Cafe. One of my favourite artists is Holland Izz from LA, his unpredictable style and energy are infectious!
If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?
I would love to open for someone like Chromeo, I feel like that would be a perfect fit. Or Dabeul.
What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?
There’s the creative part in the studio, when you’re making a record. That’s magic, but also when you get to perform that song onstage in front of an audience. I’d say those are the two most rewarding parts.
And what is the most frustrating part?
All the promo/marketing that goes with it. It’s become super easy to release your own music but now the challenge is cutting through the noise to get your stuff heard.
And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?
Not to jump on any trends or follow the crowd but to focus on what makes you unique and sticking to your guns.
