Getting To Know... Twilight Lounge

Having already established himself with a breadth of dazzling delights these last few years, LA-based artist and producer Noah Shaner returns to his Twilight Lounge project to deliver his vibrant new single 'Nothing Never Ends'.

Lifted from his newly unveiled EP 'Does It Make Sense Yet?', which is available to stream now, 'Nothing Never Ends' makes for a brilliantly broad and driven listen. Capturing more of that bold and dynamic psych-rock-inspired aesthetic he is known for, he continues to shine as one of the more inventive names doing the rounds right now.

So with the new single available to stream now, we sat down with him to find out more about his origins and what has been inspiring him most lately.

What was the first instrument you fell in love with?

Guitar! I tried to start learning when I was 11 but my hands were too small and I got frustrated so I quit. When I picked it up again a few years later I would practice for 5-6 hours a day because I just couldn’t get enough.

What kind of music did you love when you were younger?

I was obsessed with Guns N Roses and Aerosmith when I was like 8. The next year I discovered My Chemical Romance and to this day their discography is still probably a desert island choice for me. In middle school I started listening to Weezer, Rage Against The Machine, Muse, Jeff Buckley, and Radiohead before I found Grateful Dead and started my psych rock journey.

What was the first album you remember owning?

Danger Days by My Chemical Romance

What is the one song you wished you could have written yourself?

Paranoid Android by Radiohead

Do you have any habits or rituals you go through when trying to write new music?

Honestly? No. I’m constantly writing new music so I feel like I don’t really have time to be ritualistic about it.

Who are your favourite artists you have found yourself listening to at the moment?

King Gizzard, G Jones, Slaughter Beach, Dog, Father John Misty, Animal Collective, Portishead

If you could open a show for anyone in the world, who would it be?

Tame Impala, King Gizzard, or MGMT.

What do you find is the most rewarding part about being a musician?

I love the creation process. From demo to master, every step of the process feels like a big cosmic puzzle where I have to find the pieces, cut them into shape, and figure out how they all go together. There’s this really magical feeling when it all comes together that I’ll be chasing for the rest of my life.

The only thing that’s more rewarding than that is when someone connects with the music. At the end of the day that’s what it’s all about.

And what is the most frustrating part?

Finishing. With every new project I delude myself into thinking that finishing will be easier than last time. At some point or another I think every song I make is the best one I’ve done yet, but by the time I get to the end stages of a project, the songs don’t even sound like music to me anymore because of how much time I’ve spent on them. At that point self doubt starts creeping in. Is this actually garbage? Is anybody even going to want to listen to this? I don’t know, it doesn’t really matter at this point - the project is done!

And what is the best piece of advice you have received as a musician?

Don’t overthink it.
