Gia Margaret - 'There's Always Glimmer'

7/10

Over the last few months, the buzz surrounding Chicago-based songwriter Gia Margaret has been steadily growing. With her self-described "sleep rock" sound, the frontwoman has been triggering some hard emotions with a string of recent previews, all leading up to her warm yet melancholic debut full-length 'There's Always Glimmer', a record that handles a wealth of troublesome issues from her own personal experiences.

From the start, the album has this very woozy appeal, opting to find the beauty in the dreary. Inspired by her own struggles with insomnia, 'There's Always Glimmer' has this lullaby-like aesthetic that aims to invite you in and hold you in a blanket of warm and expressive cuts that have just a hint of an uplifting pretence. It is this positive direction that really holds the record together, keeping it from falling too far into a depressive state and leaving you with a very comforted sensation.

The album may not be one of those releases that reaches out and grabs your attention straight away, but over time you begin to feel a real connection to her demeanour. 'There's Always Glimmer' is a true slow-burner that becomes more enticing with every play, making it something you'll find yourself returning to again and again.
