Girlpool - 'Girlpool' EP

7/10

For the last few months or so, we have been hearing more and more about this female duo from New York who have managed to strip back their sound to its absolute basics and give us a new EP of grunge-like anthems and catchy choruses. While the lack of percussion within their sound may throw you to start, it is clear that these two don't need anything more than their voices and guitars to create a succinct body of material that brings out all the emotions in their music.

Taking inspiration from classic minimal rock outfits like The Moldy Peaches, the whopping seven-track EP from Girlpool has such a variety of pace and intent, you genuinely feel like each one of these songs has been painstakingly put together in order to send you on an emotional roller coaster. While they all start with this downtrodden, woe-is-me composition, the music does like to let its hair down and have some fun at the same time. Giving them a fantastically well-rounded sound that keeps you listen and interested until the very end.

Definitely worth a listen if you are looking for something a little different from your standard indie rock bands, and a great introduction to these two fantastic songwriters.
