Gulp - 'All Good Wishes'

7/10

Since the release of their debut album 'Season Sun', a lot has changed in the world of Gulp. The original pairing of Super Furry Animals’ Guto Pryce and wife Lindsey Leven have now been blessed with a child, and as a result have relocated themselves from their familiar Cardiff base to the Scottish East coast. While it may not seem like much of a move, Wales and its surroundings were very much part of the influences of their first full-length, and now adding guitarist Gid Goundrey to the mix, the sound of their new LP is a stark contrast to their initial work.

While the heady mix of psychedelic pop-rock and a dreamy shoegaze feel remain very much a part of their new sound, 'All Good Wishes' has this strong tone of separation in its direction. Mainly the feeling of saying goodbye to their old life and looking to accept their new environment and situation, no matter what it may be, this new release still manages to maintain a solid sense of wonder throughout. Much like their first outing, the now trio seem set on delivering the same spirit they have always had, but seen from a position of growth and change.

It certainly seems to have a more eclectic feel to it this time around. Rather than a focused direction, the outfit are branching themselves out in order to mix up the pace and atmosphere on this new album. And while it may have the overt feel of being a far different beast to their first LP, it still maintains much of the magic and chemistry of that debut.
