Indiana - 'No Romeo'

8/10

This year has already been a positive start to Indiana. Despite releasing material from this record as early as 2012, it was at the end of last year that her latest single 'Solo Dancing' brought huge acclaim towards the vocalist, who now releases her debut album 'No Romeo'. Inspired by the trip-hop and bass-led electronica of the 90s, Indiana has added a pop sensibility to her sound and gives her music a dark yet accessible direction.

In all, 'No Romeo' is a focused and well-conceived debut from an artist who clearly knows what she is looking to create. The record keeps to a very mood-driven rhythm that occasionally breaks away from its down-tempo sound to give the album a positive momentum and keeps the energy moving forward. While her tortured voice never really develops on this record, the production is what keeps the music above board and creates a real ebb and flow that maintains an interesting album from start to finish.

It is certainly a brilliant listen from an artist who has yet to really let herself be heard. She has brought a whole new idea to contemporary pop music and it is something that fits well with the crooning mentality of many other emerging artists today.
