The Joy Formidable - 'AAARTH'

8/10

Since the release of their stunning debut album 'The Big Roar' back in 2011, Welsh trio The Joy Formidable have been one of the most exciting and unpredictable bands working today. Their unique blend of intense production and anthemic songwriting had been their hallmark until the release of their third studio album 'Hitch', which saw them adopt a more radio friendly direction. But as they introduce their fourth full-length 'AAARTH', it is clear that their original fire is back as they unleash an uncompromising collection of blistering riffs and thunderous atmosphere.

'AAARTH" is not only a recognisable title, but a strong word to fully describe the raw intensity of this new release. Rather than focus themselves on what might work well in a popular music environment, the trio have instead thrown caution to the wind on every single track and delivered a release that mirrors the sheer brutal impact of their debut LP. This new record is a breath of fresh enthusiasm from a group that were unsure of their place in the scene for so long, returning with more confidence and bite than ever before.

From the start, 'AAARTH' is a wonderfully diverse release that really delivers the power that we always knew this band had. It really feels like they have lost all interest in listening to what others think about their music and unveiled something true to themselves, resulting in one of their best records to date.
