Justice - 'Hyperdrama'

6/10

When they released their breakthrough debut LP 'Cross' in 2007, it was seen as one of the most pivotal moments in French music since Daft Punk's 'Discovery'. An incredibly immersive and progressive affair that blended classical instrumentation with hard electronic production, Justice were set as true innovators arriving on the world. But ever since they have tirelessly worked towards matching that initial release, usually to mixed results. And now they return with their long-awaited fourth studio album 'Hyperdrama', a record that looks to move in a more expansive direction.

Having been eight years since their last release 'Woman', the buzz surrounding this new collection was obviously going to bring a lot of attention towards their new aesthetic. And while guest artists like Tame Impala, Connan Mockasin, and Thundercat do their best to add some variety to their duo's sound, 'Hyperdrama' is largely a dampened down version of their first full-length. While all the same brutal textures remain a staple, there just doesn't seem to be the same innovative spirit this time around, making for a rather disjointed listen in places.

While it is obviously good to have some new Justice to get our teeth into, 'Hyperdrama' just isn't as memorable as their previous endeavours. Moving with all the right pace and creativity, but just lacking the same punch they have done before.
