The Killers - 'Wonderful Wonderful'

7/10

After releasing their largely forgotten fourth studio album 'Battle Born' back in 2012, it was clear at the time that The Killers needed a new approach if they were ever going to continue as strong as they had done previously. But now five years down the line, the band have managed some positive buzz from their singles so far, and from the initial listen, it seems that 'Wonderful Wonderful' is the comeback they needed and their fans wanted.

In a real back-to-the-drawing-board approach, this new release sees the Las Vegas juggernauts channel the energy of their first couple of full-length and reengage it for a contemporary audience. Rather than dwell on the more downbeat direction they have adopted recently, they seem to have taken a cue from Arcade Fire's reinvention, and aimed to add a more danceable and electronic element to their sound. The result gives this album far more identity than their previous work, and actually helps give them a relevant voice once again.

It is fair to say that The Killers haven't sounded this good in a long time. It is still a far cry from their best work, but considering their tenure, this definitely lands in the top half of their material so far. A progressive and likeable release, 'Wonderful Wonderful' is exactly where their sound needed to be in 2017.
