King Tuff - 'The Other'

8/10

Over the last decade or so, King Tuff aka Kyle Thomas has been a fairly prolific individual. After releasing a bundle of albums and EPs in very quick succession, he found himself reaching a whole new level of popularity in the aftermath of his 2014 album 'Black Moon Spell'. But after the buzz and tour dates began to wind down, Thomas found himself feeling more like a lucky chancer than a success story, and thus brings us to the attitude behind his fourth full-length 'The Other'.

The frontman admits that this album is about bringing yourself back from rock bottom, during a time which to others should be a celebration, he found to be the best he could possibly manage at that time. But rather than dwell on the negativity of feeling lost and without goals anymore, 'The Other' is very much about setting yourself apart from your expectation and looking for new ideas to explore. The result is this fully honed and tuned follow-up than manages to keep him just as expressive and adventurous as he has always been.

It may have taken a lot of psychological musings to get there, but King Tuff's return was well worth the wait. A sharp and engaging release with all the hallmarks of a songwriter that simply can't stop himself from persevering.
