Kitt Philippa – ‘You’

9/10

Despite growing up in a mostly classical music environment, Kitt Philippa draws from a rich well of sonic references. Their production and performances reflect a craft steeped in contemporary digital soundscapes, without ever losing their affecting singer-songwriter sensibility. Following on from the success of debut singles ‘Human’ and ‘Grace’ , the multi-instrumentalist has now released their new single and EP, both titled: ‘You’, via Paragon Records.

Speaking about the new single, Philippa says “'You' is a combination of thoughts but its output is a love that is not obviously tangible; love can seem distant but still be present; it can almost be imaginary, or like a memory. It was from that context 'You' was written. Some of the lyrics circulate around the idea of space, alluding at times to a perceived 'emptiness'; but love flows between and through us and leaves its trail.”

The four-track record pleads for kindness, compassion, and courage over an instrumental defined by emotive keys and tasteful electronics. Throughout the EP, Philippa uses their hauntingly soulful voice to deliver lyrics that burn with sincerity. Across themes as dynamic as innocent love and spiritual renewal, ‘You’ is a deeply affecting accomplishment from an artist oozing with intelligence and integrity.
