Lauv - 'All 4 Nothing'

7/10

Ever since he first emerged with his stunning breakthrough hit 'I Like Me Better' in 2017, US pop artist Lauv has always managed to move in his own distinctive way. While very much akin to the glossy world of commercial pop, he has managed to cultivate a reputation for more intrinsic and adventurous textures within his work, giving him this wonderfully refreshing sound that culminated in his highly-praised 2020 debut LP 'How I'm Feeling'. And after a couple of years to find his next move, he returns with his eagerly-awaited sophomore album 'All 4 Nothing', a record that continues that impressive streak to date.

While this new collection feels very much in the same vein as 'How I'm Feeling', he feels like a more fleshed out artist this time around. Although that initial full-length brought a broad and inventive tone to his material, 'All 4 Nothing' feels like the raw edges of his original sound have been smoothed out, making for a more easygoing and developed listen. Despite some of the songs not quite holding up to the vivid aesthetic of those pre-released singles, there is still this brilliantly enjoyable thread running throughout this new offering, giving us another heady dose of his passionate songwriting throughout.

A strong and vibrant storyteller from start to finish, 'All 4 Nothing' is a bold return from a name that brims with confidence and prowess. Lauv had already found a devout following with his efforts over the years, but this new work continues more of that riveting direction as often as possible.
