Local Natives - 'Sunlit Youth'

7/10

The evolution we have seen with Local Natives isn't that uncommon in today's music scene. From their humble beginnings as a charming indie outfit, to their dream-like direction on the 2013 album 'Hummingbird', the Californian group have opted to take the dive into a more electronic influence and this forms most of the feeling of their third album 'Sunlit Youth', a record that drips with sunshine and bliss while keeping one eye on current affairs.

While this new electronic image does push them dangerously close to Coldplay territory, the overall feel of the album is far more suited as an accompanying work to their 'Hummingbird' release. With its laid-back vibes and occasional references to the current state of US politics, it likes to play on the sides of concerned optimists. Aiming to create an enjoyable environment without simply ignoring the problems on their side of the pond.

It is obviously their most contemporary record to date and with a strong message about resilience running throughout, 'Sunlit Youth' plays itself as an anthem for the youth of America with an unrelenting confidence.
