Martha Wainwright - 'Goodnight City'

7/10

It seems like we can't go more than a few months before hearing something new from a member of the Wainwright family. In fact, it was only last year that Martha released the collaborative album 'Songs In The Dark' with her half-sister Lucy Wainwright-Roche. And much like that release, this new album from her is also collaborative in a way. 'Goodnight City' was co-written with a number of other artists including Beth Orton, Glen Hansard, as well as other members of her family, creating a very homely experience.

But this isn't a traditionally collaborative album, more like a holiday singalong with the Wainwrights. It's played and produced like Martha is sitting in the corner of the room, encouraging others around her to join in and form this very intimate release. With a minimal approach to instrumentation, Martha's voice is very much the focus of this release as she delivers one beautifully melody after another, showing us exactly how much a spectacular lyricist she is.

But don't expect anything too groundbreaking on here. Martha Wainwright isn't really the experimental kind, but what she has done is look to draw you in with her stunning lyrics and gives the listener a truly memorable and engaging experience.
