After first receiving mass appeal from his time as a contestant on Australian Idol back in 2007, singer-songwriter Matt Corby spent the following nine years building his name from scratch. Releasing four EPs since 2009, Corby has managed to reinvent the public perception of him and create a sound that is not only unique to himself, but something that his fans have been rallying round him for. Now he releases his debut album 'Telleric' and it certainly makes a statement about who he is as an artist.
Fitting that Jack Garratt type of performer that uses loops and a minimal backing track to create their music, Matt Corby has found himself a niche that suits his transcendent singing style. Treating his own voice as another part of his musical medley, 'Telleric' is more about showing off the multi-directional approach he has to his songwriting than fixing on one particular influence. Uplifting and engaging, this new release is the result of almost a decade of experimentation and exploration.
While it may still have its ebbs, the record is a positive start to Corby's full-length intentions. It is clear he is still figuring out where to take his sound next, but for now, 'Telleric' is just what those who have been following him would have wanted.
