Maverick Smith - 'With Friends & Imperfections'

7/10

Throughout these last few months, US newcomer Maverick Smith has been busy crafting a fresh and distinctive direction in which to call his own. Inviting a broad and diverse array of fellow musicians to join him on this journey of self-discovery and innovation, he has been quick to create a vision that both borrows from the past, and looks to the future in equal measure. And after plenty of experimentation towards his sound, he is now introducing himself to the fold with his stunning debut album 'With Friends & Imperfections', a record that cements his adventurous spirit to date.

Given its varied approach to both style and aesthetic, 'With Friends & Imperfections' still manages to carve a firm and focused avenue in which to explore. Developing from a classic rock-inspired groove that channels a wild frenzy of other genres along the way, his initial full-length certainly makes a bold and driven statement about the kind of artist he wants to be. Brimming with killer hooks and a powerful production across all ten tracks, Maverick Smith introduces himself to the scene with flair and finesse here.

It may still be early days for him right now, but 'With Friends & Imperfections' makes for a dazzling introduction into his progressive ideals to date. Moving with this fun and lively energy from start to finish, we can't wait to hear where this journey will take him next.
