Mike Lindsay - 'supershapes volume 1'

7/10

Throughout the last two decades, Mike Lindsay has been seen as a power behind the throne. Producing Speech Debelle's Mercury Prize winning 'Speech Therapy', creating the experimental folk project Tuung, and teaming up with Laura Marling for their LUMP venture, he has made a solid career and reputation for bringing others to the light and delivering some mesmerising ideas along the way. But after many years in other people's shadows, he is now stepping into the light for his debut solo LP 'supershapes volume 1', a record that beams with immersive textures throughout.

While credited as a solo project, Mike Lindsay has also recruited the notable Anna B Savage for his latest offering. Together the two turn out a beautifully warm and innovative collection that builds upon his tenacious presence once again. 'supershapes volume 1' has this almost untethered feel to it, creating a broad and adventurous listen that is more about Lindsay finding his own distinctive direction in which to explore, the journey of which is more than a little compelling.

It may have come after some of his more impactful projects over the years, but 'supershapes volume 1' is a bold and dynamic offering from one of the UK's more interesting producers. Delivering one explorative effort after another, Mike Lindsay certainly feels at home within a solo guise here.
